It seems that the stresses caused by the tsunami in Japan has caused a lot of unhappy Japanese couples to re-evaluate their lives and relationships. And they have come to realize that life is short and they want to be single again.
Hiroki Terai, a former car salesman, utilized his entrepreneurial instincts and took advantage of what he saw as a niche in Japanese relationships. So two years ago he created the divorce ceremony, whereby for a substantial fee of 55,000 yen (about USD680), he organised a ritual of divorce that includes a buffet meal and ends with a ritual smashing of wedding rings with a gavel, which has been described as immensely cathartic.
Business really took off after the tsunami. A lot of couples felt that it was time to make a change and re-set their priorities, marriage taking a back seat to work and other pursuits. Obviously, unhappy couples on friendly terms were much more suitable candidates for happy divorce packages.
